Ambulatory microphlebectomy is a minimally invasive procedure performed as an alternative to traditional surgical vein removal for the treatment of visible bulging varicose veins. Performed under local anesthesia, ambulatory microphlebectomy removes medium to large abnormal veins through very small incisions in the leg with an excellent cosmetic result (see our photo gallery). Since veins are thin walled and collapsible, even large veins can be removed through tiny incisions using this safe, relatively painless procedure.

Procedure
Ambulatory microphlebectomy is simple to perform in our Texas offices under local anesthesia. First, your doctor will identify and mark the damaged veins. Then a local anesthetic solution called tumescent will be placed into the tissue surrounding the veins, followed by removal of the veins through 2-3 mm incisions. The procedure takes about 45 to 60 minutes to perform depending upon the number of veins removed, and most patients experience very little discomfort. The wounds due not require stitches and you may shower 36 hours following the surgery.
Recovery and Results
After the ambulatory microphlebectomy procedure, compression stockings should be worn during waking hours for seven days to help minimize post-procedure swelling and bruising. Patients are able to walk immediately after the surgery and can usually return to work within 24 hours, although exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided for five to seven days. The small scars from the incisions become almost invisible by six to twelve weeks following the procedure.
Microphlebectomy is often combined with radiofrequency or laser ablation, and ultrasound guided sclerotherapy to eliminate the underlying diseased veins responsible for the visible varicose veins. In general, you can expect these procedures to eliminate the bulging unsightly veins and return the legs to a more normal appearance. Your legs should also feel considerably better as eliminating the varicose veins will often provide immediate relief from the aching pain and inflammation (phlebitis) often associated with varicose veins. Possible Side Effects
While ambulatory phlebectomy is considered a very safe procedure, there are certain risks and complications associated with all surgical procedures. Some of these risks for microphlebectomy include bruising, swelling and incomplete removal of all of the damaged veins, especially if they are extensive. If there are remaining veins following microphlebectomy, most can be injected with a sclerosing solution, which eliminates the diseased vein chemically.
